Background

The legacy application was acquired by Thomson Reuters several years ago. It has a large high-profile customer base with a love-hate situation.

Challenge

  1. Tax Accountants use it annually to file income tax for large corporations with hundreds of entities.

  2. Expert users who want the entire application to look and work like Excel Spreadsheets.

Discovery

I facilitated a 1-day workshop in 2015 to better understand how the accountants use the product and their tax cycle, and then a 3-day session at company’s annual tax conference.

Design

During the workshops, we started sketching the ideas together. Later turned into wireframes and high fidelity prototypes for user testing.

User Testing

Income Tax users adores spreadsheets and they live by the numbers. With so many visual and UI changes, we decided to conduct a self-guided user testing during the company’s 3-day tax conference in 2016. Each session had approximately 40-60 participants. As a result, a huge amount of data was collected.
